We have all heard it before. "Make sure you have anti-virus, a firewall, anti-spyware, anti-malware, etc, etc, etc." Sadly enough though, there is still a good portion of the public that routinely surfs the Internet to random websites, and click on links in emails, facebook accounts, and myspace accounts with little to no protection of their sensitive information.

I spent the better part of my night a week ago ridding a family member’s computer of malware. Malware, for those who may not be familiar with the term is defined as software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner’s informed consent on Wikipedia. Malware can come from virtually anywhere.

It could be from a picture someone sends you in an email that looks and seems completely legit or a website you have visited. A user will usually become infected with this by no action of their own or in some instances by clicking on a link on a website. Most malware installs a program on your machine that will open it up to more malware, trojan horse’s, or viruses. Many user do not even notice that they have been infected. There are some simple practices you can train yourself to do to counteract this threat. I have personally employed all of these and have not been infected with malware for over 6 years.

DO NOT click on links in emails, even if they come from friends and family.

Most malware, spyware, and viruses come from via email. If you have never received a link from a friend in email before why would you get one now?

If a link looks like this: Click Here! DO NOT!! Think about how many people you know that actually label their links these days. Most people just copy and paste the whole link.
DO NOT go to web sites with questionable or illegal material

These sites are usually riddled with all kinds of malicious programs and code.
Beware of "Free Software"

Ask yourself why the software is free in the first place. It may be providing you with what it says it does, but what it doesn’t say is usually the issue. Programs such as "Comet Cursor" and "Hotbar" from a few years back are great examples of this. They would provide users with what they wanted, but at a price as both were notorious for tracking your activities and sending information to marketing databases.

A slightly more notable piece of software that sent user habits and information back to its source for marketing and advertising purposes was Weatherbug. It provided what seemed to be a useful service, however users began noticing it using quite a bit of system resources and the truth came out.

MOST IMPORTANT – Make sure you have protection and that it is up to date and scanning regularly.

Many notable software companies provide protection for these types of problems. Find the one you trust most and make sure it auto-updates daily if possible and set it to scan your machine on a regular basis (again, daily if possible).

When it comes to businesses, you can never be too careful. Businesses are often the targets of attacks where the attacker is specifically trying to get access to customer information. Make sure your protection is up to date and inspected regularly!

As one of several important steps in malware removal, savvy computer users have suggested booting into the Windows Safe Mode to run anti-malware scans – conventional tech wisdom being that no malware can load when booted to Safe Mode.

Well, for severe malware infestations, Safe Mode is no longer safe. The newer variants of some malware all load even when Safe Mode is used. There are a few different ways of accomplishing this, the most common being that the malware registers itself as a critical system process. This ensures that it is loaded regardless of what happens, and makes it much harder to shut down.

To make matters worse, these threats will often shut down all critical Windows Services, preventing you from going into the Task Manager, starting the msconfig or registry utility, and changing the properties of the Desktop wallpaper settings (more on this in a moment).

So how does the average computer user combat these attacks? If you are experiencing an attack of this kind, where even Safe Mode loads the malware, then the resolution is beyond the reach of the average user. At this point, the computer needs to be taken to a reputable computer service center or IT Consultant, but you must be firm and assertive as to what you want them to do to resolve the problem.

You need to confirm whether they have the necessary tools to boot the computer into a separate Windows environment. There are third-party tools that allow you to boot into a Windows environment from a CD. One such tool is Barts PE, a stripped-down version of Windows XP. It boots completely from a CD, and loads a simple graphical user interface. Coupled with plugins, McAfee, for example, you can scan your entire computer without the fear that your nifty little infection has somehow loaded.

Once your tech-support confirms that they have such a tool, insist that they use that tool to run an anti-malware scan on your computer. That will allow them to employ additional corrective measures, once Safe Mode is safe again. When you go to pick up your computer, don’t leave without first confirming that the following processes and features work:

• Have the technician confirm that the Task Manager, the Windows Registry and msconfig utilities can load
• Have the technician confirm that Internet browser searches using Google (or any other search engine), do not redirect to non-related sites or pages
• Have the technician confirm that the Windows Display properties allow for the changing of Desktop wallpaper settings. (Some malware will often display a fake threat warning on the Desktop wallpaper. Any attempts to change the wallpaper back to default settings will prove futile, as the malware will block the settings to make that change possible.)
• Have the technician confirm that the Windows Services panel (accessed by typing services.msc from the Run command window) does not show most or all services disabled

And just as with many of its predecessors, this pesky spyware will inundate your computer with fake security alerts and try to scare you into purchasing the "full" version. Thankfully, there is a fool proof way to get rid of AntispywareXP 2009 for good.

Like the many other rogue antispyware programs out there, AntispywareXP 2009 will usually find its way onto your computer via a fake popup that claims that you are infected with a spyware or a virus. The popup will urge you to download and install software that will scan your computer and report back all of the infections that it has found. The problem with this, however, is that none of the findings are real.

Regardless of what infections AntispywareXP 2009 says you have, you need to know that the software never scans your computer at all. What you have seen is a fake screen that looks as though it is scanning all kinds of files, but is really doing nothing.
